Completed Project
Developing an IT Strategy for your Industry
As information technology expands ever deeper into individual industries and marketplaces, a firm's IT usage and management strategy will increasingly be determined by the characteristics of its real world business environment. In 2007, we presented an overall framework for developing an IT strategy. In this 2008 project, we will build on this work to show how implementation of these fundamental building blocks is diverging to better align IT strategy with industry-specific and marketplace forces.

Developing an IT Strategy for your Industry
01 Aug 2008 | Position Paper
Historically, the IT industry has been what economists would describe as predominantly a horizontal business, as IT products and services have been used similarly and widely across just about every industry sector. Our industry’s leading hardware and software suppliers provide their products to a broad range of customers, just as the largest IT services firms tend to have substantial cross-industry footprints. On the customer side, IT organizations in different industries often face many similar infrastructure, personal productivity and back-office challenges, and it has always been relatively common for CIOs and other IT professionals to move from one industry sector to another.
