Getting to be CEO via a Career in IT
Research shows that CIOs who make it onto the company executive board have the shortest tenure of any member, typically surviving for only 15 to 18 months. There is much anecdotal knowledge about CIOs being promoted to the board and about their failures, but few facts are known about cases of sustained success and even fewer about progress beyond the role of CIO.
This research will identify role models for CIOs who aspire to continue their career progression, and will describe what must be done to emulate their success.

Getting to be CEO via a Career in IT
28 Jan 2005 | Position Paper
This report is a series of annotated PowerPoint slides that illustrate the research journey we undertook to understand the traits and characteristics of individuals who have made it to the top from a career in IT.
It is hoped that our key findings will provide a set of guidelines to those with the desire to get to the top, or at the very least, to gain the ear of those at the top of their organizations.
Only then will the CIO have the maximum impact on business decision-making and fulfil the role of ´Chief Innovation Officer´.
