Renaissance translates as ‘rebirth’, and is the name given to the period when Europe emerged from the Dark Ages into a more enlightened modern era. The Renaissance was a fiercely forward-thinking time. It spawned a scientific revolution where science, technology and culture began a cycle of mutual advancement. Today, a similar blend of technology-driven cultural change drives an evolution we characterize as the renaissance of the IT organization. 

In this report, we specifically address the questions:

  • What will the technology capability of the future organization look like (its renaissance) and what is driving its evolution?
  • What are the eras and stages that the technology groups evolve through?

Bill Murray, based in the UK, is a Senior Researcher and Advisor for Leading Edge Forum.  Bill is the author of our report entitled, Rethink Risk Through the Lens of Antifragility, co-author of our paper WT* is a Platform and co-author for our publication The Renaissance of the IT Organization. Bill’s IT career spans over 30 years, with 16 years as a Founder and Partner of Differentis, providing strategic IT consulting services to many industry sectors.  Bill has experience of developing Digital and business technology strategies, business cases and change programmes involving technology disruptions such as consumerization, analytics and cloud based services.  Most recently, Bill has been helping clients develop IoT enabled business propositions and services in Connected Health, Connected Insurance, FMCG and supply chains, and advising on IoT platforms. Bill’s experience also includes setting up/running business and IT innovation projects; shaping and growing analytics groups; IT organisation reviews; development of strategic IT initiatives and business cases; development of business and IT architectures; IT strategy definition; mobilization, delivery and turnaround of major programmes and business process reengineering. Prior to Differentis, Bill was Vice President of Management Consulting and Strategic Development for CSC where he consulted to clients on IT strategy, programme management and business/IT innovation projects.  Prior to CSC, Bill held various strategy roles with KPMG Nolan Norton and Accenture.  Bill is a chartered engineer by background, and started his career with Arup in high energy impact analysis in the the nuclear and automotive industries.
Glen Robinson

Glen Robinson, based in the UK, is an Emerging Technology Advisor for Leading Edge Forum.  Glen’s main focus of research is leading edge Enterprise technology solutions that will power the 21st century business. He is the co-author of our research publication The Renaissance of the IT Organization. The cloud has unlocked innovation that is now allowing the next wave of disruptive technology solutions to come to market, and whilst businesses are still working out how best to maximize the value from cloud services, they are now aware of ‘the Matrix’, this advanced sensing, deciding, all-seeing, global force that will be a significant threat to some.  But others will learn to understand it, to harness its power, giving them and those around them super-powers.  Put simply, we are moving into a time where our own capabilities will be augmented by that of powerful, intelligent robots.  A lot of the tasks we do today won’t exist tomorrow as they will be fully automated but also watched over and governed by advance cognitive intelligence.  The interface into this world is moving away from the screen on our device, to the world around us becoming an interactive physical and digital experience, which will be responsive to our needs.   As consumer expectations leapt forward with the adoption of the internet, so too is it about to leap forward once more now the Matrix is upon us.  This will change the way we service our customers, deal with our employees and live and do business in the 21st century.
