Eric Masanet is a researcher in the area of industrial energy analysis within the International Energy Studies Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).  His primary research areas include:

• Life-cycle assessment of products and industrial systems.
• Industrial energy demand and efficiency analysis.
• Modelling and optimization of energy efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation strategies in different geographic regions.
• Development of energy efficiency improvement guidebooks for various US industries in support of the US EPA's ENERGY STAR for Industry programme.

Prior to joining LBNL, Eric was a post-doctoral researcher in the Consortium on Green Design and Manufacturing at UC Berkeley, where he performed research in the areas of product design for recycling and environmental supply chain management for the electronics industry.  He has several years of industrial experience in the areas of green design and product development.  He has also consulted in these areas for clients in the hi-tech industries.

He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, with a specialization in environmentally-conscious design and manufacturing.

His current research projects as follows:

• Modelling of mid-term (2025) and long-term (2050) potentials for energy efficiency improvement and greenhouse gas emissions mitigation in the California industrial sector.
• Analysis of greenhouse gas emissions reductions achievable through the adoption of low-carbon products in California.
• Development of a life-cycle energy use and greenhouse gas emissions model for California households.
• Development of a life-cycle analysis framework for evaluating the sustainability of U.S. building materials.
• Life-cycle environmental assessment of infrastructure systems for biofuels.

Eric holds a joint research appointment in the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.  He also serves as Program Manager for the UC Berkeley Engineering and Business for Sustainability (EBS) Certificate Program and is Associate Editor of the journal Resources, Conservation, and Recycling.
