- The CIO’s role in accelerating business innovation
4 Jun 04 | Position Papers
This Position Paper is presented as a series of annotated PowerPoint slides. We are experimenting with this format because we think that it can be an effective way of quickly introducing certain types of largely conceptual material. We look forward to client comments about both the content and format that follows. Our future research in this area will focus on specific implementation issues and strategies.
The series of unattributed quotes used throughout this paper are from some of the many CIOs, recruitment professionals and others interviewed in the course of our research.

Major IT trends will significantly influence the future role of IT departments and of the CIO. Among the most important trends are a renewed increase in IT spending and innovation, value-creating innovations being increasingly driven by customers (not suppliers), and an evolution toward a layered, best-of-breed IT delivery model.
A key challenge CIOs still face is overcoming the traditional IT stereotypes held by any business people, while dealing with the fact that these same business managers generally possess limited knowledge of IT.

The CIO today faces unprecedented challenges. In industry after industry, businesses are scrambling to survive the economic slowdown.
They are divesting unprofitable business lines; outsourcing some core functions to improve their balance sheets; and partnering with customers, supply chain providers, and even former rivals to expand product lines and sales at minimal cost.
Frank will discusses how he addresses these opportunities and challenges at Dow

- The CIO´s Role in Accelerating Business Innovation
17 Aug 04 | Presentation
Increasingly, top management is asking their CIOs to help drive significant business innovation.
Unfortunately, innovation often means very different things to different people, with many CIOs still taking an overly narrow technological view.
Based on our recent research, this presentation examines the current status, perceptions and possibilities of the
CIO position. David:
- Explains why innovation has become a hot topic once again.
- Describes the CIOs´ strengths and weaknesses as business innovators.
- Provides models to communicate and prioritize the many types of innovation.
- Discusses the contribution that you as the CIO can make to improve innovation in your organization.
- What CEOs Expect of Their Future CIOs
17 Aug 04 | Presentation
What does the CEO want in a CIO? Why does one CIO get chosen over another? What does a CIO need to look, feel, touch, smell and sound like in order for a CEO to want to hire them? What is really behind that immortal line "They really loved you, but unfortunately another candidate was just that little bit closer to their requirements"?
Stepping into the mind of a CEO and articulating what he/she wants in a CIO is unfortunately not what you may read on a position description. The CIO position crosses all lines of business as well as all functional areas. A CEO wants someone who is sensitive to those needs as well as someone who will add value to the entire executive suite. This is not just a technologist. This person is a technology wizard, a strategist, an innovator, a business leader and a manager/ coach. But hold on! Isn´t that the CEO´s job specification?
- Innovation - What is it to the CIO?
26 Apr 04 | Presentation
There are not many organisations left in which innovation is not amongst the top priorities on the CEO´s agenda. Increasingly CEOs are looking to their CIOs to help improve their organisation´s innovation performance. This presentation takes a closer look at the nature of innovation by exploring what makes an innovative organisation and the role of the CIO in the context of innovation.
During this interactive session, Bettina von Stamm:
- Helped us to define ´innovation´.
- Gave insights into, and understanding of, the holistic nature of innovation.
- Asked to explore your organisation´s attitude towards innovation.
- Considered the contribution you as the CIO can make to improve your organisation´s innovativeness.
Bettina also presented insights and findings from an interview-based study into innovation that she has undertaken on behalf of CSC´s Research & Advisory Services.

- The Role of IT in Corporate Innovation
24 Feb 04 | Presentation
At this web conference, we heard from Bettina von Stamm, an expert in the leadership of innovation and author of The Innovation Wave and Managing Innovation, Design & Creativity. She explained why there is the current surge of demand for corporate innovation, why innovation is so difficult, and what CIOs and other managers should know if they are to succeed in this discipline. This web conference formed part of our research project being led by Bettina, to study the future role of the CIO and IT in corporate innovation.
This web conference will be particularly valuable to all managers who will be involved in creating the environment for innovation to succeed, or who need to understand innovation to maximise the part that they can play in developing, progressing and implementing innovative ideas.
