- The CIO’s Role in an Open Innovation Economy Sept 07
19 Sep 07 | Presentation
Innovation is clearly back on the business agenda as companies seek to sustain competitive advantage in an increasingly global and Internet-driven economy. Yet there are clear signs that the nature of innovation is fundamentally changing. While organizations have always needed to challenge their own teams and culture to be more innovative, increasingly businesses are looking to the marketplace for innovative solutions. The combination of customer co-creation, mass collaboration, and the global flow of ideas is leading to a new and more powerful open innovation economy. These developments present important new challenges and opportunities for CIOs who must expand their focus beyond internal systems, processes, and change agendas, to encompass the firm’s entire business ecosystem.

The session features our latest research on what successful CIOs are doing to increase the business impact of IT in their organizations.

Why are some CIOs able to enjoy an expanded mandate, where they take a full part in strategic discussions and are expected to express a view on many aspects of the organization’s business, whilst other CIOs are kept much more restricted in their business engagement and contribution? Are they just lucky to be working in an enlightened business? Did they target specific roles in specific sectors? Is it something about their personal career background or special skills?
In this web conference, Gordon Watt highlights the findings of the latest work and tie this back to the CIO Role-Types and other LEF research, which should enable any ambitious IT executive to plan a route to the top and collect together the personal resources it will take to be successful.

14 May 07 | Presentation
How do some CIOs manage to expand their IT mandate and become full members of the executive inner sanctum when so many others do not? Is it something about the organizations they choose? Is it an enlightened and IT savvy executive peer group that makes the difference? Perhaps you feel it is a feature of certain industry sectors?
Or is it something peculiar to the individuals involved, their CIO background, role-type, or character? LEF researchers, Brinley Platts and Gordon Watt, examined these issues and came up with some surprising and inspiring conclusions. This presentation will set out their findings, and offer advice for more effective career development.

Looking into the upper echelons of large organizations you may be able to see a new emerging influence: the CIO. Will this prove to be a growing trend?

Pick up almost any piece of trade press, academic article or IT research study about CIOs and you will likely find the same flawed pre-supposition.
Whether the authors feel that CIOs are important or unimportant, essential or not, the future or the past, they all seem to assume that CIOs are fundamentally the same, despite their obvious differences in performance, style and value.
This report argues that CIOs are not all the same, and that understanding how they are different is the key to unleashing the performance of your IT leadership team.
