• Web services – More than the sceptics expect; less than the vendors promise

  In this report, Research Services provides a guide for CIOs to implementing a pilot project that will add value to the business in one of the five areas we have determined web services work well.
  
  With the proper security measures, web services do offer the promise of agility in customer-facing internet-based applications and are worth investigating now in order to be ready when they begin to deliver on their promise in the next several years.

  In October 2002, delegates from around the globe embarked on a Research Services Study Tour to Silicon Valley and Seattle, intent upon separating the reality from the hype surrounding web services.

• Web Services: The Business Value

  The Business Value of Web Services was the theme of our first presentation on this topic. We were joined by a number of delegates from around the world for a web conference in which Mary Crowe presented the results of their early work.

  This included:
  • an overview and critique of web services architecture, contrasted with other approaches such as EAI (Enterprise Application Integration), and informed by information about the standards and vendor offerings that constitute web services technology. Some examples of web services available today were also discussed.
  • a case study where SOAP, XML and Microsoft´s Visual Studio .NET offering are being used to deliver a new justice system for Western Australia.
  • summaries of new capabilities that web services bring, and of significant problems that remain.

  The past five years have been a roller-coaster of activity for IT departments, stretched to the limit to beat the millennium bug while simultaneously adapting to the new dimension of ‘Internet time’. The skills shortage has never been as severe, nor the pace of technology introduction as dramatic or as unpredictable. In this article, with the change in economic climate, we take stock of the issues facing IT departments – particularly the pressures from external customers, and the need for extended business connectivity.

  The Internet has established a considerable corporate presence but for many, there are still questions to be answered:

  • how to create the electronic equivalent of shops and stores
  • how to collect payments electronically
  • how to cooperate with business partners to fulfil orders
  • how to exploit consumer information
  • how to make communication secure.
  This report, which is based on the findings of the 1996 Technology Study Tour, held in May in San Francisco addresses these issues.

  The tour visited 11 companies representing a range of technologies, applications and experience in electronic commerce. Delegates came from 50 companies in 11 countries.

  The strongest support was from financial services and retailing companies, but the complete spectrum of industry was represented, reflecting the universal interest in the theme.

  The results of our research into Internet and the New Business Connectivity are expressed here as a series of Management Messages.

  In our Final Report, published in February 1996, we discuss these messages in more detail, examine case studies on organisations that have acted upon them, and provide more detailed advice on the issues raised.
