  We believe that culture, behaviour and values will ultimately carry the day in the battle for information security.

• ID cards – smart solution or privacy nightmare?

  In the UK, debate rages about national ID cards. Are they a good way of responding to the increased need for security in a world beset with terrorism, or are they an unwarranted intrusion into citizens’ privacy?

  Other countries around the world are also grappling with the implications of this debate even while they struggle to make their populations safe.

  What is clear is that the demand for better security is growing, and identity cards of some sort are already a part of the solution: you cannot board a plane anywhere in the world without showing some form of official ID.

  At the same time, stolen and forged passports are a growing problem worldwide – and a growing business for the unscrupulous.

  The dark side of the Internet has become more apparent as we have become more dependent upon it for everyday business success. New management issues have arisen even as we struggle to come to terms with the new dimensions that this powerful medium has introduced. Managers now have to wrestle with moral dilemmas, legal issues, regulations, new forms of etiquette and new behaviours in the workplace.

  Events of the past few months have amply illustrated our vulnerability and powerlessness against ever more sophisticated cyberattacks.

  For the first time, we have seen a co-ordinated worm attack against one organisation (Microsoft), a phenomenon predicted by us in 2001 at the forerunner to this Information Security Focus Group.

  Clearly, our current ´fortress and policy´ approach is inadequate and ineffective, and the advent of mobile and wireless technologies are only going to expose more inadequacies.
